But we’re not here to explore “big-city” life.  We continue northward along the coast road to East Boothbay.  Just as we suspected:  this little harbor town is even quainter than  Kennebunkport.  And if you stay in the Five Gables Inn, one of the numerous bed-and breakfasts in the area, even your Martha’s Vineyard breakfast fantasy pales by comparison.

The Boothbay peninsula is typical of northern Maine: wild, rugged bays, hundreds of tiny islands thickly forested with pine, and a network of meandering country roads that, despite your Rand McNally Atlas, inevitably lead you astray.  Without fail, these pretty little byways debouch on the water at some kind of fishing village or sailing port, surrounded by colorfully painted shingle houses, a country store, a souvenir shop, a post office an perhaps a bank, and everything is so damn quaint! Did I mention that already?
