The Yankee Traveler

You want it all – easy access to all the area’s activates, but secluded calm and quiet; old-fashioned comfort with modern convenience; a whopping big breakfast without a single calorie.  OK, so you can’t have everything, but a stay at the Five Gables Inn in East Boothbay comes close.  This meticulously renovated 1870s structure on a craggy hill overlooking Linekin Bay is East Boothbay’s only remaining summer hotel.  Owners De and Mike Kennedy have delved into the inn’s history and can spin a yarn or two about its bygone days.  (Ask why names were scrawled on the undersides of the dining room chairs.)  All 15 rooms face the bay, and all have private baths and a homey touch here and there.  Guests staying in the cozy, eccentric rooms under the gable are warned to watch their noggins.  After the multicourse breakfast buffet, you’ll be ready to set out for the days adventure --  even if that only means strolling out to a rocker to rusticate on the inn’s welcoming porch.
